You Should Be Exfoliating More in Summer — Just Differently
Most people pull back on exfoliation in summer because they've heard it makes skin more sensitive to the sun. There's truth to that — but backing off completely is a mistake. Your skin actually needs exfoliation more in the warmer months, not less. The key is knowing how to do it right.
Why summer skin needs more exfoliation
Heat and humidity increase oil and sweat production, which means your pores are working overtime. Dead skin cells mix with that excess oil and sit on the surface, leading to congestion, breakouts, and that thick, dull look that sets in mid-summer. Regular exfoliation clears that buildup and keeps skin looking fresh and clear.
On top of that, if you're wearing more SPF (which you should be), that product can accumulate on the skin throughout the day. Exfoliating regularly ensures your skin stays clear so your serums, moisturizers, and treatments can actually absorb properly.
The part people get wrong
The problem isn't exfoliating in summer, it's using the wrong kind or overdoing it. Harsh physical scrubs, aggressive acids used too frequently, or exfoliating right before sun exposure can all cause irritation, sensitivity, and increased risk of hyperpigmentation, especially on deeper skin tones.
How to exfoliate smarter in summer
Stick to gentle chemical exfoliants like lactic acid or mandelic acid, they exfoliate effectively without the micro-tears of physical scrubs.
Exfoliate at night, never right before heading outside.
Limit frequency, 2 to 3 times a week is enough for most people in summer. More is not better.
Always follow with SPF the next morning without exception.
If you've recently had a professional treatment, follow your post-care instructions before resuming home exfoliation.
Summer skin can absolutely be smooth, clear, and glowing, you just have to work with it, not against it.
